The Inhouse Farming – Feed & Food Show offers everything concerning the topic of indoor farming under one roof, thereby making it the most important platform for modern and pioneering cultivation technologies. The application and use of controlled environment agriculture methods, i.e. the production of plants, animals and fish under controlled conditions, enable the production of regional foods with maximum resource efficiency and with a quality, which is similar to organic products – one of the central elements for for enabling the food security .
Vertical farming offers a wealth of possibilities for producing a sufficient quantity of fresh food for local consumption in very constricted spaces. Proximity to major urban centres enables short distances, particularly in terms of the downstream supply chain, and significantly reduces transport and logistics costs.
The most common vertical farming crops are leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach, arugula, and herbs, such as basil, cilantro and parsley. These crops are particularly well suited for cultivation in vertical farms due to their short growing time and higher market demand. Other vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and strawberries are also grown in vertical farms, although the technical challenges for these crops are higher than for leafy vegetables and herbs. Given economic viability other crops, such as cereals and legumes, may be increasingly grown in vertical farming to meet the need for sustainable and resource-efficient farming methods.
